Dear Mr Addyman,

As you suggest, I receive a considerable number of unsolicited letters from members of the public, of varying degrees of sanity.

I would recommend to you a book by one of my colleagues, here at Reading, John Cottingham. The book is appropriately titled ‘The Meaning of Life’: it is available in paperback at around £8 and was published last year by Routledge.

Yours sincerely,

Michael Proudfoot
