Deer cost of roof damage at Waterloo

by GERAINT SMITH

A REINDEER may have been responsible for damage to the roof of the Waterloo International Eurostar terminal, it emerged today.

The discovery of the damage, said to have happened at least 18 months ago, occurred during an inspection which also found part of a reindeer's leg lying nearby, the rail operator revealed today.

How it got there is not known. The usual sources of debris are overflying aircraft or birds. Eurostar is involved in a High Court battle over the state of its £120 million roof, amid fears that the glass panels could "explode" under tension and fall on to passengers.

The eastern facade of the station roof is shrouded in tarpaulins put up nearly two years ago to protect travellers from falling glass.

The writ was issued in November and follows months of disagreements between Eurostar and the roof designers.
