Dear Tessa Jowell,

I am very concerned about the measure proposing to exempt MP’s expenses from public scrutiny as contained in the FoI (Parliament) Order 2009. I cannot see the logic or the justification for it. On grounds of the principle of greater transparency in public life it sends a very conflicted message.

I hope you will be opposing this measure and I would urge you to sign Jo Swinson’s Early Day motion.

Yours sincerely,
Caspar Addyman

El Gordo Brown has climbed down. Government has cancelled the vote on this order. See bbc story. So sometimes they listen to public opinion.. or perhaps they were inspired by this bit of Obama’s inauguration speech:

“And those of us who manage the public’s dollars will be held to account – to spend wisely, reform bad habits, and do our business in the light of day – because only then can we restore the vital trust between a people and their government.”
